Maccabi Tel-Aviv Football Club
The Maccabi Tel Aviv Football Club is the leading football club in Israel and the first Israeli club in history to participate in the European Championship Cup.

Maccabi Tel Aviv holds the Israeli record for winning the most championships and national cups. Just over 35 years ago Maccabi Tel Aviv won the Asian Championship Cup. More Maccabi Tel Aviv players have played for the national team than from any other club. In the fifties and sixties the leading players were Eli Fuchs, Joseph Mirmovitch, Yehshua Glazer, Joseph Goldstein, Shmuel Israeli, Yitshak Shneur and Rafael Levi. The next generation consisted of players including Giora Spiegel, Zvi Rosen, Menahem Bello and Rahamim Talvi. They all played with the national team in the World Cup finals in 1970 in Mexico. Later followed Meir Nimni, Avi Cohen, Dror Barnur, Vicky Perets, Beny Tabak, Motti Iwanir and Boni Ginzburg. The present generation consists of players such as Baruch Degu, Eli Biton, Oren Zitoni and Liran Strauber, all playing or played in the past for the Israel National team together with 5 international U-21 players.

Maccabi Tel Aviv`s stadium for league games is the Bloomfield stadium in Jaffa. The club`s practice fields are located south of Tel Aviv in the Kiryat Shalom neighborhood. Mofet Sport Ltd. manages the Maccabi Tel Aviv Football Club.

Sports in Israel

Football (soccer) and basketball are considered the most popular sports in Israel. The nation has reached many achievements in other sports, such as handball and track and field athletics, in addition to a wide variety of other athletic activities.

When it comes to sports in Israel, the emphasis has traditionally been on participation rather than the production of elite athletes. Part of the reason for this is the necessary compulsory military service that almost all Israelis perform after turning 18 years old. Another reason may be in the Jewish ethos and psyche that has traditionally considered always endorsed athletic pursuits as a form of competition. This can be seen in the story of the Maccabees (and Hanukkah) and their rejection of the Ancient Olympic ideals.

Nonetheless, many modern Israelis follow football and basketball sporting teams almost as ardently as many other Europeans do. In the Olympic Games, Israel has won 6 medals in judo, fencing, canoeing, and sailboarding.

From a participatory perspective, many Israelis enjoy non-competitive activities such as swimming, going on tiyul (hiking trips) and playing Matkot on the beach. A game that is particularly popular at junior level is an Israeli form of dodgeball known as Ga-ga.
