The Madaba map poster
- The Madaba map is the earliest map of Israel known today. The Madaba map is a geographic map of Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Sinai and Egypt.
- The centerpiece of this map is the walled city of Jerusalem. Taking an eastern orientation, the map portrays the Holy Land, showing Jerusalem at the center. The map of Jerusalem is the most illuminating and accurate, source of our knowledge of Byzantine Jerusalem. The bird's eye view of the city is shown with its walls, gates, streets and major buildings which are partly identifiable even today. The image below shows the Jerusalem portion of this map.
- The map is part of a mosaic on the floor of a church built in the town of Madaba, in what is present-day Jordan, in the sixth century.
