This package contains strings of Radzyn Techelet produced with blue dye using the ink from "Cuttlefish" (Sepia officinalis). Cuttlefish are marine creatures belonging to the Cephalopoda class (which also includes squid, octopuses, and nautiluses). Despite their common name, Cuttlefish are not fish but molluscs. Cuttlefish have ink, like squid and octopuses.
The biblical "Techelet" was produced from a creature referred to as the Hillazon. The exact identity of the Hillazon was lost over the generations and thus Jews traditionally wore only white strings. The first attempt to rediscover the Hillazon was made by the Radzyner Rebbi, known as the Ba'al HaTechelet, Harav Hagaon Rabbi Gershon Chenoch Leiner Z*TL of Radzyn. In 1887 the Rebbi declared the Cuttlefish to be the lost Hillazon and began producing blue dye from its ink. There have since been other identifications of the Hillazon, but Radzyner Hassidim carry on the Rebbis tradition to this day by dyeing tzitzit with Cuttlefish Techelet in Bnei Brak, Israel.
