The Madaba Map
The earliest map of Eretz Ysrael that we know today is the Madaba map. Its centerpiece is the walled city of Jerusalem. It is the most illuminating and accurate, source of knowledge about Byzantine Jerusalem. The bird's eye view of the city is seen with its walls, gates, streets and major buildings which are partly identifiable even today. It is part of a mosaic floor of a church build in the sixth century in the town of Madaba, which is situated in present-day Jordan.
