Israel's mapping history
To those who are interested in Israel's mapping history, here is a short article about this interesting subject:
The earliest map of Eretz Ysrael that we know today is the
Madaba map.
Its centerpiece is the walled city of Jerusalem. It is the most illuminating and accurate,
source of knowledge about Byzantine Jerusalem. The bird's eye view of the city is seen with its walls,
gates, streets and major buildings which are partly identifiable even today.
It is part of a mosaic floor of a church build in the sixth century in the town of Madaba,
which is situated in present-day Jordan.
The first map of our area which can be considered a modern one is
Jacotin's map.
It was drawn by the French Corps of Engineers and Geographers which accompanied Napoleon Bonaparte
on his campaigns in the Near-East. Prominent scientists, equipped with the most up-to-date surveying
instruments of the time, were attached to the army units. Among them were topographers,
one of whom was Mr. Jacotin, a colonel in the French corps of Engineers and Geographers.
